Ready-made or made-to-measure motorized blinds: which one do you actually need?
Ready-made motorized blinds are a real option and not a bad one — they just answer a different question. Here is the honest comparison, and which windows suit which.
This comes up constantly. Someone sees a motorized roller blind online for a few thousand baht, then sees a made-to-measure price worked out by area, and wonders why they differ. The answer is not that one is better. They are selling different things: one is a finished product, the other is something built to your window with someone to come and fit it.
Side by side
| Ready-made | Made-to-measure | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | A set of standard sizes — you pick the closest one to your window | Cut to the size a fitter measured at your window |
| How soon | Straight away if it is in stock | 7-14 days after you confirm, depending on how many units |
| Who fits it | Usually you do | Our fitter, roughly 20 minutes per unit |
| Fabric and colour | Whatever that seller stocks | Come and see the samples at the shop, or the fitter brings them to you at the measure |
| If the size is wrong | That risk is yours | If the error is ours, we fix it at our cost |
| Warranty | Depends entirely on that seller | Motor 6 years · installation 1 year · fabric not covered |
| Price | A single figure at checkout | Worked out from the real size — starting rates below |
When ready-made is the better buy
- A standard window that happens to match a size they sell
- One or two windows, not a whole house
- You are renting and would rather not spend on something you cannot take with you
- You are happy to fit it yourself, and a small light gap at the edges does not bother you
- You want it today and would rather not wait
When made-to-measure pays off
- A bedroom you want genuinely dark. A one-centimetre gap at the edge still reads as a bright line on the wall in the morning. Only a blind cut to the reveal closes that.
- Windows that are not standard sizes — transom panes above doors, tall glass, or openings the builder did not get quite square.
- Several windows in one house, where you want the same colour from the same fabric roll, all driven by one remote.
- High or awkward windows. Part of what you are paying for is not going up the ladder yourself.
- Wanting someone answerable if something goes wrong three years from now.
How we price ours
We price by actual size, not per piece. Below are the starting rates per unit, before VAT, and before the motor and fitting. For the full breakdown of where each figure comes from, read how motorized roller blinds are priced.
| Product | Starting price | Minimum per unit | Motor per unit | Installation per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motorized Roller Blind | 690 THB/sq yd | 1.5 sq yd | 5,000 ฿ | 200-2,500 THB per unit depending on size |
| Motorized Curtain Track | 5,900 THB/set | — | — | 200 THB per unit · under 10 units is a flat 2,000 THB · free over 20,000 THB |
Excludes VAT · the final price depends on fabric grade and how many units
| Product | Width (cm) | Height (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Motorized Roller Blind | 50+ | 100+ |
| Motorized Curtain Track | 100–1600 | — |
Larger openings are still possible — they are simply split into several units. Message us.
The power question, whichever you buy
- A motor needs power. If there is no socket near the headrail, an electrician has to add one first — we do not do wiring.
- If you would rather not run cable, there is a rechargeable battery motor: about 2 hours to charge, 4-6 months per charge.
- Ours run from a remote, a phone app or a wall switch. The app is Tuya, and no separate hub box is needed.
- One remote can drive several blinds at once.
- We fit Somfy, Novo, Kacee and Uni motors. They typically last 5-10 years and we warrant them for 6.
Are the cheap ready-made motorized blinds any good?
They can be, if your window matches a size they sell and you can fit it yourself. The real difference is not necessarily quality — it is the fit, having someone measure, having someone fit it, and having someone answerable later. We cannot speak for another seller's warranty terms, so read those before you buy.
Can you fit a ready-made blind I already bought?
No — we do not fit blinds bought elsewhere, and we do not take cleaning or repair work either, wherever the item came from.
My window is tiny — can it still be made to measure?
Our roller blinds start at 50 cm wide and 100 cm tall, with the per-unit minimum shown in the table above. Below that, a ready-made blind may genuinely suit you better.
Can I try a ready-made one in a single room first?
Yes, and it is a sensible way to go about it. Try one in a room where light control matters less — a living room or study — then decide whether the bedroom is worth having made.
Want the numbers for your own windows?
Send rough sizes first — no need to measure precisely. We'll work out a price, then arrange the real measure.
