Edge-of-estate houses facing open land: low evening sun
Houses in the row along the edge of an estate often open onto empty land on one side. If that side faces west, the evening sun dropping towards the horizon reaches deep into the house with no buildings or trees to stop it. Low-angle sun like this slips in under the eaves easily and lands right at the eye level of someone sitting or lying down. Closing a heavy curtain fixes it, but the room goes dark from late afternoon. For a living room or study, wooden blinds are the better fit: tilt the slats a little at a time to cut the glare while the room stays bright. For a bedroom on the same side that really needs to be dark, a blackout roller mounted over the frame leaks much less light at the edges than one fitted inside it.
