How curtains are priced, why it is by the yard, and what cheap really means

Updated 2026-09-015 min read

The most common question is how many yards a two-metre window needs. The answer is not two metres converted to yards — and understanding why is the key to reading any curtain quote.

Why curtains are priced by the yard

Roller blinds and wooden blinds are priced by the square yard because they are one flat panel: width times height, done. A curtain is not flat. It needs fullness. Fabric cut to the exact width of the window hangs flat against the glass, never closes properly, and never looks right. So the fabric actually used is always more than the opening is wide — and more again for headings with deeper folds. The price therefore comes from the fabric consumed, in yards, not from the window width.

What one curtain actually costs

  • Fabric — yards used times the per-yard rate of the grade you pick. The largest line, and the one you control most.
  • Track — a standard track, or a motorized curtain track if you want it to move itself.
  • Making up and hardware — depends on the heading style.
  • Fitting — 200 THB per unit for us, a flat 2,000 THB under ten units, free over 20,000 THB.
  • VAT — not included in any price on this site.

Our starting rates

We stock three fabric grades, from standard through to premium, with over a hundred colours. The per-yard rate of each grade is on the curtain page. Below are the starting rates.

Why two shops quote so differently

  1. Different fabric grades. The number one cause — a different rate per yard is a different quote entirely.
  2. Different fullness. A shop that allows more fabric uses more yards, hangs better, and costs more. Neither is cheating; you are getting different things.
  3. One includes fitting, the other does not.
  4. One includes VAT, the other does not.
  5. Different heading styles. Pinch pleat, eyelet, taped wave and Roman folds do not use the same fabric or the same labour.

Is cheap actually cheap?

Sometimes, yes. A standard-grade fabric at a lower rate per yard is a real product, not a trap. For a room out of direct sun, a rented flat, or a room you will restyle in a couple of years, standard grade makes complete sense. What deserves suspicion is not cheap fabric but a cheap quote that has not costed the whole job. If one quote is thirty thousand lighter than another, go line by line and find the missing line before deciding you found a bargain.

How many yards for a two-metre window?

There is no fixed answer — it depends on the heading style and the allowance, which the fitter works out at the measure. The yardage is itemised on your quote. What is certain is that it is always more than two metres.

How many fabrics and colours are there?

Three grades — standard, mid and premium — with over a hundred colours, in four heading styles: pinch pleat, taped wave, Roman fold and eyelet.

I already have curtains and want them to open themselves — new fabric too?

No. If the fabric is still good, just change to a motorized curtain track — no fabric cost at all.

Are the website prices final?

They are starting rates, before VAT, fitting and any site-specific extras. We deliberately do not total anything up on the site, because the real figure depends on sizes, grade and unit count — all of which need a measure first.

Want the numbers for your own windows?

Send rough sizes first — no need to measure precisely. We'll work out a price, then arrange the real measure.
