Motorized blinds, wooden blinds and curtains in Chatuchak

Most people know Chatuchak for the weekend market, but as a place to live it breaks into fairly clear groups. The first is the condos along Phahon Yothin, from Ha Yaek Lat Phrao up through Ratchayothin, Sena Nikhom and Kasetsart University, following the BTS line — many of them compact units for working people and students. The second is the units that look down over Chatuchak Park, Queen Sirikit Park and Wachirabenchathat (Rot Fai) Park, one large continuous stretch of green. The third is older detached houses and townhomes down the sois off Phahon Yothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit. Those three groups need quite different window treatments, even though they sit only a few kilometres apart.

What comes up most often in Chatuchak

Written from how people actually live here, not text that would fit anywhere.

Condos on Phahon Yothin between Ratchayothin and Kasetsart

The train along this stretch runs elevated down the middle of Phahon Yothin, so road-facing units watch it pass the glass all day. Many are studios or one-bedrooms where the bed or desk sits a few steps from the window. At that scale, curtains that need room to stack when open take up more space than people expect, and a roller that tucks the whole panel up into its headrail usually fits better. Check early whether there is a socket near the window. If there isn't and you would rather not bring in an electrician — we don't do wiring — a rechargeable battery motor avoids cabling altogether.

Units overlooking Chatuchak Park and Rot Fai Park

A big stretch of trees is a rare view in Bangkok, but the trade-off is that there is no building opposite to take the sun. When the sun is on the park side, light hits the full width of the glass with nothing in the way. Keeping blackout drawn all day throws away the reason you chose the unit. The more sensible route is sunscreen at around 45 percent during the day, so the park stays visible, with an opaque fabric kept for the bedroom. The other upside of the park side is that there are hardly any windows close by at eye level, so daytime privacy is far less of a pressure than in a unit facing the next tower.

Older houses in the sois off Phahon Yothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit

A house that has been lived in for decades usually has several window sizes under one roof. Some frames have been replaced, and some rooms were added later, so the gap from frame to ceiling no longer matches the original rooms. Every window has to be measured on its own — you cannot measure one and assume the rest follow. Plenty of these houses still have their original woodwork, such as frames, stairs or timber floors, and a wooden blind matched to that woodwork sits better than a modern fabric colour. Know the limits first, though: wooden blinds are made up to 250 cm wide and 300 cm tall per unit, so anything bigger is split into several.

Common questions

What customers in Chatuchak ask

What does a measure in Chatuchak cost?

500-1,000 THB, the standard Bangkok and metro rate, credited back in full when you order. The quote follows within one day of the measure, and the price holds for 7 days.

I want to screen off the bed in a studio — how tall can a room divider be?

Room dividers are made up to 360 cm tall, and they slide away when you are not using them. At the measure the fitter also checks the ceiling along the line of the track — if it is plasterboard that needs a backing beam to carry it, that is 550 THB per metre.

Our unit looks over the park and we want to keep the view — which fabric?

Sunscreen blocks around 45 percent of the light and you can still see out through it, so it suits rooms used in the daytime. A bedroom that must be properly dark takes blackout, which stops light completely. We bring fabric samples to the measure so you can hold them against the room's real light.

Once we order, how long until it is fitted?

7-14 days from the day you confirm, depending on how many units. On the day, fitting takes about 20 minutes per unit, and you need to be there, because the fitter shows you how everything works before leaving.
