Skylight Blind

About the Skylight Blind

Roof glazing and ceiling skylights deliver daylight that side windows simply can't. They also bring a problem side windows don't have: the sun comes straight down through them for most of the day, with no eaves to shade it and no corner of the room that escapes it.

So a skylight blind isn't an ordinary blind mounted on a ceiling. The fabric needs a frame or side channels to hold it, because gravity pulls it into a sag instead of pulling it taut the way it does on a vertical window. The wider the opening, the more that matters.

And no two glass roofs are alike — different pitch, different framing, a different distance between the glass and anything you can fix to. That's why this category is genuinely made to order for each roof, and why it's always measured on site. There are no off-the-shelf sizes here.

What it does well, and where it falls short

The limits up front, so nothing is a surprise once it's on the wall.

Where it works well

  • Glass roofs over back kitchens and extensions that become unusable by mid-afternoon
  • Skylights over stairwells and double-height halls, where light drops into the middle of the house all day
  • Rooms with glare bad enough that screens and books are unreadable at certain hours
  • Spots where sun lands directly on furniture or wood flooring and fades it in stripes
  • Homes that want to keep the daylight but choose when to accept it

Where we'd point you elsewhere

  • If you're after an off-the-shelf price or size — every roof here has to be assessed on site
  • Roofs with nowhere solid to fix to, or that can't safely be reached to install
  • If you expect it to cool a room like air conditioning — it manages light and direct solar gain, not temperature itself
  • Places you could never get up to again — anything on a ceiling needs occasional access
  • Genuinely urgent jobs — this is made for your roof, not taken off a shelf

How to choose without regretting it

Work through these in order and the choice narrows fast.

  1. 1

Establish the pitch before anything else

A steeply pitched glass roof and a nearly flat one are different problems: the pitch decides which way gravity pulls the fabric and how much support it needs. This has to be seen in person — photographs alone don't settle it.

  2. 2

The gap between glass and blind matters

Sitting the blind hard against the glass makes the heat trapped between them harder to shed. Leaving room for air to move through is a design conversation to have up front, not a fix to attempt afterwards.

  3. 3

How opaque is actually right for the room

A bedroom under a skylight usually wants something opaque so daytime sleep is possible. A stairwell or a kitchen normally just wants the glare knocked back while staying bright. Judge it on how the room is used, not on heat alone.

  4. 4

Plan for reaching it from day one

Dust on a ceiling blind is invisible from below until it's thick. If getting to it means a tall ladder or scaffolding every time, the cleaning simply won't happen. Work out the access route while it's still a design, not a fixture.

  5. 5

Check there's something real to fix into

Some glass roofs have aluminium framing that's easy to fix to; others are bare glass spanning steelwork some distance away, which changes the installation completely. This is the number one reason the site visit comes first.

How the price is worked out

There's no published starting price for this category yet, because we don't have a confirmed figure to put up — and we'd rather not post a middle-of-the-road number that misleads you from the start.

What a skylight job really costs depends on the size of the opening, the pitch of the roof, what structure there is to fix into, and how hard the spot is to reach. None of those four can be judged from photographs. Message us and describe the roof, and we'll work it out with you.

  • Light block — 50–100%

What moves the price

  • The size of the skylight or glass roof being covered
  • The pitch of the roof, and how many openings there are
  • What structure is available to fix into, and whether backing has to be added
  • The height and difficulty of access, including whether scaffolding is needed
  • The fabric type and how opaque you want it
  • The site visit, charged differently inside the Bangkok metro area and outside it

Looking after it

You won't see the dust from underneath

A ceiling blind collects dust on its upper face where nobody in the room can see it — until the day you open it and it rains down. Put it on a schedule, like the annual deep clean, rather than waiting to notice.

Spot-clean with a damp cloth

Marks up there are usually water spots or caked dust. Dab with a well-wrung damp cloth and let it dry completely before closing the blind. Avoid solvent cleaners — most solar fabrics carry a surface coating.

Check the fixings once a year

Anything fixed to a roof takes vibration from wind and movement as the structure expands and contracts with heat. Running an eye over the fixings once a year is worth doing — and another reason to plan the access early.

Don't force it if it feels stuck

A blind working on a slope carries different forces from one hanging vertically. If it starts to drag or the fabric runs off line, stop and look before using it again — forcing it is what turns a small misalignment into a permanent one.

FAQ

Questions we get about this one

What does the site measure cost?

500-1,000 THB in Bangkok and the metro area, credited back in full when you order. Outside that it starts at 3,500 THB depending on distance and is not credited back.

What should be ready before you measure?

The room needs to be fully finished — the measurements have to be the final ones.

How long from order to installation?

7-14 days, depending on how many units.

What if a measurement is wrong?

If the error is ours, we fix it at our cost.

Do you work outside Bangkok?

Sometimes, depending on distance. The site visit starts at 3,500 THB — message us to discuss.

Does a skylight blind actually reduce heat?

It makes a clear difference to direct sun — no more shafts of light in your eyes, and furniture stops getting cooked. But the glass itself still absorbs heat and re-radiates it, so this isn't a complete answer to a hot room. Expect a noticeable improvement rather than a cure.

Why measure on site every time — can't I send my own measurements?

Because a skylight isn't just a width and a height. It needs the pitch, the structure to fix into, the distance from glass to fixing point, and a safe way up. Get any one of those wrong and the whole thing can't be installed — unlike an ordinary window, where width and height are enough to work from.
